Unacademy appoints Sumit Jain CEO of Test Prep division

Edtech unicorn unacademy has named co-founder Sumit Jain as chief executive officer of its test preparation business division.

Jain joined Unacademy after selling his startup Opentalk to the company. Earlier, he had founded the real estate portal Commonfloor, which he sold to Quikr in 2016.

“I have known Sumit since 12 years when he was the CEO of CommonFloor and he acquired my first company Flatchat. Sumit joined us as Co-Founder in 2020 and has been instrumental in significantly improving the Unit Economics of our Test Prep Business and more importantly the Learner Experience,” Munjal said in his post.

The leadership change follows co-founders Munjal and Roman Saini stepping back to focus on their new venture, AirLearn. Third co-founder Hemesh Singh left in 2024. 

Unacademy is also expanding beyond test prep, launching its language app AirLearn in June 2024, starting with Spanish and planning French, German, and Indian languages.

Competing with global apps like Duolingo and Babbel, AirLearn now has nearly 70,000 daily users and $2M in annual recurring revenue, says Munjal.

In test prep, Unacademy competes with Byju’s-owned Aakash Institute and PhysicsWallah, backed by WestBridge Capital and planning a public listing. 

In 2023-24, its revenue fell 7% to ₹840 crore, while net loss narrowed to ₹631 crore from ₹1,678 crore. Financials for 2024-25 are yet to be filed.
