Jasprit Bumrah Joins Sustainable Luggage Brand Uppercase As An Investor

Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah has invested in the modern luggage brand Uppercase, becoming one of many celebrities now choosing to invest in startups instead of just endorsing them.

The company didn’t reveal how much he invested or how much of the company he owns. Bumrah has been the face of the Mumbai-based brand since it started.

Uppercase founder Sudip Ghose said they will work with Bumrah to create a special line of luggage, backpacks, and gym bags designed mainly for athletes. Bumrah will also earn a share of the profits from this collection.

This is Bumrah’s first investment in a startup.

Commenting on his investment, Bumrah said, “It’s the way Uppercase has built something meaningful in a space that’s very cluttered. Their focus on sustainable materials, functionality, and design, and the fact that they’re doing it all out of India — was really impressive.”

“There’s a lot we are planning to explore, but to keep it simple — I’m bringing in the perspective of someone who’s always on the move. Whether it’s long tours or short trips, I know the small things that make a big difference in a bag. I want the design to be clean, functional, and genuinely useful —especially for people who travel often, like athletes or professionals," he added.

Just days ago, Virat Kohli ended his Rs 110 crore deal with German brand Puma after eight years to join Indian sportswear startup Agilitas, started by Puma India’s former MD.

In recent years, cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Yuvraj Singh and Ajinkya Rahane have also started investing in startups or launching their own businesses.

Uppercase, which makes all its products in India, will soon start using its own factory in Nashik. Right now, around 60% of its sales come from offline stores, while the rest come from online channels.
