Battery technology startup e-TRNL Energy Datalabs has raised ₹27.4 crore (around $3 million) in a seed funding round. The round was led by IAN Alpha Fund, with participation from Navam Capital and Anicut Capital.

The funding round also saw investments from Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, along with existing investors Speciale Invest, Micelio Mobility, and IIMA Ventures.

The startup said it will use the new funds to finish developing its product and showcase its ability to manufacture lithium-ion battery cells at large scale in India.

The company says its technology can make batteries safer, charge faster, last for more cycles, and store more energy. It also aims to make battery production more reliable and easier to scale.

The startup has built a complete solution that covers battery cell design, manufacturing technology, and machine development. It says all the machines used to produce the battery cells—from early design to full automation—are developed by its own team.

“With this funding round, we move towards demonstration, testing and scaling our innovation for commercialisation. Beyond positioning India as a leader in energy storage innovations, these efforts will also strengthen our resilience against global supply chain vulnerabilities in these changing times,” e-TRNL Energy cofounder and CEO Shaligram said.

e-TRNL Energy Datalabs plans to begin commercial production in a pilot phase with a capacity of 250 MWh per year. Later, the company aims to increase this capacity to 2 GWh per year.

Earlier, in 2022, the startup raised about ₹7.5 crore in a pre-seed round from Speciale Invest, Micelio Mobility, and CIIE.

Founded in 2021 by Apoorv Shaligram and Uttam Kumar Sen, e-TRNL Energy Datalabs is developing a battery cell technology that is flexible in terms of chemistry. The company says its technology can work with current lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries as well as future sodium-ion (Na-ion) battery chemistries.
