AstraZeneca to Invest ₹176 Crore in Chennai Global Innovation Centre to Drive AI-Enabled Healthcare

Global pharma giant AstraZeneca has announced an investment of ₹176 crore in India to expand its Global Innovation & Technology Centre (GITC) in Chennai.

This marks AstraZeneca’s third major investment in India within the last two years, aimed at strengthening the GITC’s infrastructure and capabilities. Expansion will further position the centre as a hub for healthcare innovation, both globally and locally, company said in a statement.

“This new investment reflects our ongoing mission to improve patient lives by embedding cutting-edge technologies into every aspect of our work. Chennai continues to evolve as a vital innovation hub, and our continued growth here demonstrates the state's boundless potential,” said Siva Padmanabhan, Managing Director, AstraZeneca India Pvt Ltd.

Investment will boost the growth of AstraZeneca’s advanced technology teams, including specialists in artificial intelligence, data analytics, machine learning, data science, and supply chain analytics, to accelerate healthcare transformation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin welcomed the development, stating, “This additional investment in Chennai is a testament to the state's reputation as a centre of excellence for global innovation. It will create skilled opportunities, foster knowledge exchange, and reinforce Tamil Nadu's position as a premier destination for future-ready industries.”

AstraZeneca highlighted that India is a key strategic hub for its technology, research and global business services. Alongside its strong portfolio in oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, and rare diseases, the company employs over 5,000 people across its operations in the country.
