To improve its secure networking capabilities across public clouds, Cisco announced its intention to acquire Isovalent, a pioneer in open-source cloud-native networking and security.

Through the acquisition of Isovalent, Cisco Security Cloud—an AI-driven, cloud-delivered, complete security platform for businesses of all sizes—will continue to grow. With the Cisco Security Cloud, users can deliver superior defense against new threats across any cloud, application, or workload by abstracting security controls from multi-cloud infrastructure.

“Together with Isovalent, Cisco will build on the open source power of Cilium to create a truly unique multicloud security and networking capability to help customers simplify and accelerate their digital transformation journeys,” said Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager of Security and Collaboration at Cisco. “Imagine in today’s distributed environment – of applications, virtual machines, containers and cloud assets – having security controls with total visibility, without hindering networking and application performance. The combination of Cisco and Isovalent will make this a reality.”

Cilium, the premier cloud-native networking and security solution, was developed by Isovalent, which also contributes to eBPF. eBPF gives unparalleled access into the operating system, making it perfect for creating security mechanisms that protect a task while it operates. Cilium gives IT and platform engineering teams powerful networking tools and unique visibility into cloud native application behaviour and communication, enabling software-defined network policy development.
