About Ramesh Agarwal:

Meet Ramesh Agarwal, the founder of Agarwal Packers and Movers, whose early life was filled with challenges. Born in the village of Nalwa, Hissar District, Haryana, he couldn’t afford private schooling as a child, so he studied at a government school where classes were held under a tree.

Instead of complaining about his fate, Ramesh worked tirelessly, driven by a strong desire to serve his nation. This passion led him to join the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1980 as an airman. During his six-year tenure, he earned the "Best Airman" award in Chennai, standing out among 542 cadets. Throughout his service, he continued his education, aspiring to achieve something greater.

While serving in the Indian Air Force, Ramesh identified an issue that ultimately led him to resign from his position as an airman. But what exactly was the issue that led him to leave such a well-paying and respected government job?

Why did the man leave his job?

During his work, Ramesh Agarwal observed that packaging was an expensive, time-consuming, and very painful task. Whenever someone had to pack, they would start a month in advance, collecting cartons from grocery stores, sourcing wood, and enlisting rickshaw pullers to help.

Even after all this, there was still no guarantee that the items would arrive safely. Noticing this issue, he decided to quit his job and work on finding a solution.

How did he resolve this issue?

To address this issue, Ramesh Agarwal came up with a solution: Agarwal Packers and Movers Ltd. This company, now one of India’s largest logistics firms, started as a small-scale business called Agarwal Household Carrier, founded in 1987 by Ramesh and his younger brother Rajender Agarwal, focusing initially on household goods relocation. The company was built on the vision and hard work of the Agarwal brothers, focusing on household goods transportation.

The company emphasizes providing affordable solutions to customers, suggesting more expensive alternatives only when necessary. Since it started in 1987, Agarwal Packers and Movers Limited has grown into one of India’s premier moving companies. Yet, his entrepreneurial journey didn’t stop there.

Beyond his success: Nidradaan Camp

While managing his business, he identified a critical issue and set out to address it. He discovered that, according to a 2012 report, 138,000 people die in road accidents in India each year. He conducted further research to investigate the causes behind these fatalities and found that one significant factor contributing to these accidents was the lack of sleep among truck drivers.

The analysis showed that nearly 26,640 accidents each year are caused by drivers not getting enough sleep. When drivers were questioned about why they don’t get sufficient sleep, they responded that they are afraid to sleep because they fear theft of diesel, petrol, and goods while they are resting. On average, drivers typically get just 3 to 4 hours of sleep, while medical advice suggests they need 6 hours. This insufficiency increases the risk of accidents.

To tackle this problem, Ramesh came up with a solution called the Nidradaan camp. This initiative offers drivers a place to sleep along with various essential facilities. As a result, they have provided 530,000 hours of rest and successfully prevented 1,010 accidents so far.
