AMD and IIT Bombay Partners to Support Semiconductor Startups

The Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), an incubator at IIT Bombay, and the multinational chip manufacturer AMD established a partnership on Monday.

According to the firm, the companies will collaborate on coming up with strategies to drastically cut the amount of energy that traditional neural networks use.

The first funding under the collaboration was awarded to Numelo Technologies, who will use silicon on insulator (SOI) ultralow power quantum tunnelling technology to produce SNN devices.

In order to assist Indian semiconductor companies, AMD has teamed up with the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) at IIT-Bombay.

As a result of this partnership, AMD will fund businesses creating semiconductors called Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) that use less energy.

The initiative’s goal of lowering neural network energy usage is in line with AMD’s objective of improving processor and accelerator energy efficiency by 30 times by the year 2025.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, AMD is collaborating with organisations that prioritise high-quality STEM education and scientific research.

Shaji Varghese, chief executive officer, SINE-IIT Bombay, said: “As India looks to execute a comprehensive semiconductor strategy, it is important to nurture, build, and grow startups in this space. As design cycles are long and the cost of entry high in the semiconductor design area, it is SINE’s endeavour to foster and create strong, product-focused, cutting-edge semiconductor design startups by addressing gaps in the industry,”
