Airtel, the largest telecommunications company in India, has introduced what it describes as the nation’s first network-based, AI-powered spam detection solution. The solution is designed to substantially reduce the number of spam calls and messages received by Airtel’s customers.
A telecom provider in the country has developed a groundbreaking solution that will notify users in real time of suspected hoax calls and SMS messages.
It is important to mention that the service is free of charge and will be automatically activated for all Airtel customers, without the necessity for them to submit a service request or obtain an application.
A proprietary algorithm is employed by Airtel’s team of data scientists to identify and designate calls and SMS messages as “Suspected SPAM.” This AI-powered solution was developed in-house. In real-time, the system evaluates a variety of factors, including the frequency of calls and SMS, the duration of the call, and the conduct of the caller or sender.

It precisely identifies suspicious calls and messages by comparing this data with known spam patterns.
Airtel also stated that the solution notifies consumers of malicious links that are transmitted via SMS. The company has established a centralized database of blacklisted URLs, and each SMS is scanned in real-time to alert consumers before they inadvertently click on harmful links.
Furthermore, the system is capable of identifying anomalous behavior, such as the frequent modification of a device’s IMEI number, which is frequently indicative of fraudulent activity. Through these layers of protection, Airtel endeavors to provide its clients with the most effective defense against the increasing threat of spam and fraud.
